CAGIS Receives Award to Evaluate Roadway Conditions using Mobile, Spatial Computer Vision
02/04/2022 Executive Director Wenwu Tang announced today that the Center for Applied Geographich Science (CAGIS) will receive substaintial funding from NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to explore new ways to streamline roadway maintence and safety sign using computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI).
The research group, consisting of Dr. Don Chen (Engineering Technology and Construction Management), Tang, and colleagues from NC State, will apply a deep learning-based approach for the detection and evaluating pavement conditions (e. g. cracks) for NC primary and secondary roadways. Road surface images will be collected using vehicle-mounted cameras (high and low resolutions), and the CAGIS Lab will be in charge of the developing the automation to detect problems in an accurate and cost-effective manner. CAGIS will use some of the award to fund student research assistants (RAs).
The project is entitled “Evaluating primary and secondary roadway pavement conditions using deep learning.”
